Hammertoe Q & A

What causes a hammertoe?

Hammertoes are toe joint deformities that lead to an abnormal bend in your smaller toes. While hammertoes aren’t typically a medical concern, if ignored, they can worsen and cause serious foot pain. You can develop a hammertoe due to:

  • Tight or pointy shoes
  • Arthritic conditions
  • Inherited foot mechanics
  • Injury or trauma, like stubbing your toe
  • Having smaller toes that are longer than your big toe

These issues can cause an imbalance in your toe muscles and connective tissues. As a result, muscles and tendons have a difficult time keeping your toe straight and start getting used to the bent position of your toe.

When should I get treatment for a hammertoe?

Initially, a hammertoe is flexible and can flatten back into its natural position. Over time, often due to regular wear of snug-fitting shoes, a hammertoe starts to stiffen.

Ideally, you’d schedule an exam with Dr. Ebonie Vincent, DPM, MBMS, while your hammertoe is still flexible and easier to correct.

It’s especially important to have a comprehensive podiatric exam if your hammertoe is stiff and rigid, or if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Painful corns
  • Limited range of motion
  • Pain that keeps you from enjoyable activities

Dr. Vincent spends time examining you and may even look at digital X-ray imaging to determine the extent of your toe joint deformity to better design your hammertoe treatment plan.

How are hammertoes treated?

In many cases, Dr. Vincent puts together a package of conservative hammertoe treatments first to see if you get relief from pain and inflammation. Your hammertoe treatment plan may include:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Personalized stretches
  • Changes in footwear
  • Padding or shields
  • Taping or splinting
  • Custom orthotics
  • Corn removal

If you have a severely rigid or painful hammertoe, Dr. Vincent could suggest hammertoe surgery. This minimally invasive procedure can be used for several toes during a single surgery to release rigid connective tissues and correct the alignment of your toe joints.
